Success for Minella and John Nallen - 7th October 2013
John J Nallen has had great success recently in the last few weeks beginning at Listowel in the John Lynch Memorial Maiden Hurdle 4yo on the 21st September winning by half a length with Minella Foru under jockey Mark Walsh. Trainer Eddy Harty said, “That was a lovely run and he’s a lovely horse. He’s won well and I’m thrilled. We’ll see what the race turns out to be. He was ready to run, he was fi...t enough if good enough...He’ll run in three or four weeks time again and that will tell us a lot. I was lucky enough to have one brilliant horse – Captain Cee Bee – and every horse I have is judged by his ability. We’re living in hope with Minella Foru, the dream is still alive!” John Nallen bred and trained Minella Foru before JP McManus and his son Ciaran showed a keen interest and he was later snapped up by the pair earlier in the year. Jockey Mark Walsh said, “He did it well on his first run over hurdles. He’s a good horse on the up. I’m very pleased and he’s very professional. It’s good to get the boss [JP McManus] a winner.”
With three other winners since, namely Minella For Value winning twice and Minella Fiveo, John Nallen has been successful. Minella For Value won the Ballinrobe Race Committee Steeplechase 5yo plus in Ballinrobe under Davy Russell winning by two and three-quarter lengths. Trainer John said after, “He’s the horse that nobody wanted! He won his bumper in Cork and was due to go to the sales, but jumped a gate the day before he was due to go and he missed the sales engagement...When we did get him to Brightwells nobody wanted him. He’s an honest staying chaser and keeps galloping and he wants good ground...We’ll keep going until he says stop, but he appears better on better ground. A race like the Cork National might be next for him.” On Saturday at Gowran Park in the Centenary Year At Gowran Park Handicap Steeplechase (Rated 0-130) 5yo plus, For Value went on to win yet again by half a length under Davy Russell, his fourth win out of five starts. Trainer John Nallen still doesn’t understand why he can’t get this horse sold. He said, “He's a mighty jumper and a big honest lad. He keeps galloping and keeps jumping; that's what they want in the UK and mine are all on the market!” He went on to say, “We’ll give him a break now and where he goes depends on the ground. He could be a Paddy Power (Chase) horse over Christmas or maybe something like the Midlands National at Uttoxeter or the John Hughes (Topham) Chase at Aintree would also suit him.” Nallens other recent runner and winner was Minella Fiveo in the Slane Maiden Hurdle 5yo plus in Navan. Winning by five and a half lengths it was success for both trainer/owner and jockey yet again. John said afterwards, “He's (Minella Fiveo) a staying horse and we said we'd make it today. He was entitled to win that and he'll be a nice chaser in time, given how well he has done in point to points”.
Nallen and Russell have had great success together lately as it’s the jockeys’ third winner in three starts for the same trainer.
