What is Functional Feeding - 07/05/10

Stonebridge, in manufacturing their PREMIUM FEEDS range, have embraced the concept of Functional Feeding in order to optimize the health and nutrition of the horse.

WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL FEEDING?

It is compensating the horses diet by feeding the most important micro flora and digestive enzyme stimulators that will not only make a direct contribution to nutrition, but also will be beneficial to health.

FUNCTIONAL FEEDS contain specific NUTRICINES that enhance health and assist the digestive process. This occurs when these nutrients have passed through the gut wall into the body, then energy can be processed or new body tissue cells can be made.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

The levels of mycotoxins existing in forage and manufactured feedstuffs are causing increasing concern.  Even with the best manufacturing and storage practices, it is difficult to prevent mycotoxins forming in feedstuffs.  Mycotoxins are poisons resulting from actively growing moulds found in forage and feeds, many of which are invisible to the naked eye.  It has been estimated that 25% of all forage and feeds fed to horses contain measurable levels of mycotoxins.

WHAT HARM CAN MYCOTOXINS DO?

Ÿ  They can damage the kidneys and liver.

Ÿ  Cause damage to cell walls

Ÿ  Decrease nutritional absorption

Ÿ  Reduce fertility

Ÿ  Lower immune response

Ÿ  Lead to poor growth and development

Ÿ  Cause oxidation of fats

Ÿ  Lead to poor performance

WHAT IS THE ANSWER?

STONEBRIDGE believe that by feeding FUNCTIONAL FEEDS which are high in NUTRICINES (components of feedstuffs that are beneficial to the health the horse, as well as being nutritious), their feeds are aiding the removal of mycotoxins and pathogens , as well as preventing their absorption into the horses body.
